7 Things Nobody Tells You Before Your First Himalayan Trek

Your first Himalayan trek will humble you in ways no gym session can prepare you for. After running dozens of group treks, here's what we wish every first-timer knew before they laced up their boots.

1. Altitude doesn't care how fit you are

We've seen marathon runners struggle at 11,000 feet while first-time trekkers breeze through. Altitude sickness isn't about fitness — it's about acclimatization. Go slow on day one, drink more water than feels necessary, and never skip the acclimatization day in your itinerary.

2. Layers beat one thick jacket, every time

Himalayan weather swings 20 degrees between sunrise and noon. A single heavy jacket leaves you sweating on the climb and freezing at camp. Pack 3-4 thin layers instead — you'll thank yourself.

3. Your phone will die faster than you think

Cold drains batteries brutally. Keep your phone in an inner pocket close to your body, not your backpack's outer flap, and carry a power bank rated for cold weather if you can.

4. Trekking poles aren't optional, they're insurance

They save your knees on the descent — which is often harder than the climb up. Don't skip them to save weight.

5. The food is better than you expect

Dal, rice, and hot soup taste like a five-star meal after 6 hours of climbing. Don't pack excessive snacks — trust the trail kitchen.

6. You will not shower for days, and that's fine

Wet wipes are your best friend. Everyone smells the same by day three. Nobody notices.

7. The summit isn't actually the best part

Ask any trekker who's done it more than once — it's the friendships made around the campfire, not the view from the top, that people remember years later.
